Read It: University of Idaho Student’s Final Post Hours Before Death

Kaylee Goncalves, one of the four University of Idaho students who were stabbed to death over the weekend, posted a final message just hours before she was killed, saying she was “one lucky girl” to be able to spend every day with her friends.

Goncalves posted the message on Instagram, alongside photos of herself and her friends, which included the other victims, Madison Mogen, 21, Ethan Chapin, 20, and Xana Kernodle, 20, writing, “One lucky girl to be surrounded by these people.”

The group was found dead on Sunday in an off-campus home, shortly after the photos were posted.

CBS News reported that just a few weeks earlier, Goncalves had posted several photos showing her and Mogen growing up together.

“I wouldn’t have wanted anyone else to be the main character in all my childhood stories,” she wrote to which Mogen responded, “I love you more than life! My best friend forever and more.”

Goncalves’ oldest sister Alivea released an emotional statement about the family’s loss.

“Kaylee was, is, and will always be our defender and protector,” she told KREM2, in part. “She did absolutely everything she set her mind to. She didn’t hold back on love, fights, or life. Kaylee was the ultimate go-getter and constantly wanted an adventure.”

Alivea said that as the middle child of five siblings Kaylee served as the “fairness fighter,” and she described her sister as always chasing adventure and living her life to the fullest, saying there wasn’t much anyone could tell Kaylee she couldn’t do.

She told KREM2 that she last spoke with Kaylee via text on Friday.

Their mom Kristi said that when she was told Kaylee and Madison Mogen, who was a close family friend, were dead, it felt like she had lost two daughters, and Alivea said she felt like she had lost two sisters.

Meanwhile, Kernodle’s sister Jazzmin told the Associated Press that her family was anxiously waiting for updates about the investigation.

“Xana was so happy and loved, and it breaks my heart. She was so lighthearted, and always lifted up a room. She made me such a proud big sister, and I wish I could have had more time with her,” she said, adding, “She had so much life left to live.”

Kernodle and Chapin had been dating, and in an Instagram post, she wished him a happy birthday, writing, “life is so much better with you in it, love you!”

Police are still searching for leads in the case, but believe the killings were an “isolated, targeted attack” and that the community at large is not in danger.
